ImageChef Word Mosaic - ImageChef.com

Using the following website (or any other), select a person who has been recognized for rising above a difficult situation: Courage of Conscience Award Recipients. The actions of this person should show an exception to Phillip Zimbardo’s claim that "the power of a situation is stronger than the character or personality traits of those involved.” They should prove that it is possible to rise above your environment!

ASSIGNMENT: Combine your writing, research, technology, and creativity skills to use an online medium to share information about someone who rose above their environment.
REQUIRED INFORMATION: Each section must be at least one page in your scrapbook!

1. Biographical Information – Minimum one paragraph of writing
Offer some basic biographical information. Where is this person from? Where were they born? What type of childhood and education did they have?
2. Information about the Environment -- Minimum one paragraph of writing
What was the environment this person overcame? What bad situation did this person find him or herself in? Be sure to include relevant historical/cultural context.
3. How the environment was overcome -- Minimum one paragraph of writing
  • How were these obstacles overcome? What did your person do?
  • Did your person suffer because of his/her choice? Why do you think they chose to suffer instead of doing the easier thing?

4. The Impact -- Minimum one paragraph of writing
  • Were the goals and objectives of the subject achieved? What good came from this person’s actions? You may have to think creatively here -- if your person died in action, that does not mean nothing good came from him or her. Think about it! :)
  • What lessons can be learned from the person’s efforts?
5. Personal Reflection – One-two paragraphs of writing
  • Do you think you would have behaved in the same way as your person? Why or why not?
  • How can you relate to this person? What do you most admire about them? Do you see any of his or her qualities in yourself?

6. Personal Experience – 1 page of writing
Recall a time that you acted like this person -- when you rose above the environment you were in. Share the story! How did you feel? Why/how were you able to rise above?

7. Works Cited -- On this page, you will not be writing paragraphs, but you will be citing any and all websites used to collect information and images – yes, this includes images! Anything that is on your project should be cited on this page, and labeled clearly so I know which citation goes with which image/piece of information.
Link to ABRHS Research Guide Resources used for information about your person should have a full citation (see guidebook for format). Images need ONLY the site, not a full citation.

Images Feel free to create your own illustrations and visuals for your poster. If you have access to Photoshop, paint programs, Illustrator, and other computer arts programs, you can use these to create visuals for your work. Otherwise, you can Google images to download and then import into your product. In addition, it would be awesome to see audio, video, and any other multimedia pieces to support your work. See if there are any primary sources! You know how strong creative images draw the interest of the viewer and offer clues to the story’s content. Choose visuals with these same goals in mind!
